How do I render an EXR without an alpha channel? I want to keep my sky, and when I render to an EXR, I lose it. Do I need to tweak my HDRI?

Hi Bobby,
How are you opening your EXRs? If you are opening them in photoshop I would suggest to install exr-io plugin to load them properly. Then the alpha won't be applied to the image and instead it will be separated in a new layer.

As Morne said in the other post, in AE you simply need to select the file in Project panel, then right-click/Interpret footage/main, then from there you can ignore the alpha.
Or you can just choose to not save the alpha in the EXR save dialogue in Max; but that is of course more potentially destructive if you decide that you then need it
