Yes, Phoenix displacement is calculated at pre-pass, so it happens while you see the 'transforming vertices' process. However, I can't seem to get the same slowdown with the beer scene. Could it be that you have any modifications to the scene, or is it untouched from the link above? Also, does removing any geometry or Phoenix node from the scene help remove the slowdown.
If you can send me the Phoenix log file while 3ds Max is running and the slowdown has just happened, it would be very helpful as well.
