Ah, regarding the smoke shading - for such large scale simulations usually the default Based On = Simple Smoke in the Smoke Opacity rollout is the best. If you already have this at 1.0 and the density is still low (meaning you see the smoke semi-transparent in the alpha channel), then it's possible that your scene scale is not real-world. Phoenix needs the simulator to be as large as the real-life thing, so for example when you go to the Simulation rollout and check the Container Dimensions info - it should say something like 100 x 100 x 100 meters (or 10000 cm, etc - the exact units do no matter as long as the size is like that of the real-world effect you simulate).
Something else you can do with the smoke is to give it more volume without actually increasing the alpha - reduce the External Scatter Mult. on the Smoke Color rollout - it would make the shadows deeper and this will make the smoke have more depth in the render: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...lor-Parameters
Btw, regarding the grid, check one more thing - the Shrink to view option in the Grid rollout: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...d-AdaptiveGrid This will reduce the grid outside the camera view, so it might be useful to you. If your camera is not shaking, it might be useful. Even if the camera IS shaking, with some Extra Margin the grid could compensate so it does not get clipped at the end.
As for the V-Ray fog - check this section of the Tips and Tricks page: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...GridonV-RayCPU
