  • Multi pass compositing of phoenix FD issues

So here's my short little clip I am trying to composite. It is just an air plane model and then fire/smoke explosion FX with phoenix and I exported bunch of passes and I use HitFilmPro to composite it. Now HitfilmPro is like After Effects on steroids so if AE can get the job done this should even better do so. I try flipping different blending modes and switching layers order around. Put them all to additive blend mode with ADD bland mode and I encountered translucency issues. This is exactly, EXACTLY why I keep asking on this forum why can't VRay export pass of a 3D model ???!! Seriously it's useless without that function as I can not do anything with this renderr that took all day. It doesn't look as bad until you god forbid add your own background, than everything falls of the rails. I don't think I will be doing this muti pass thing I think I will have to import background and everything in Max and pray for the render I won't have to touch too much in post but please ChaosGroup, make a pass for next issue of the software where we can get a 3d model separate from the explosion or anything because this way I ended up with see through model. I have to rotoscope the plane now from RGB pass so it would be color corrected separfately from FIRE/SMOKE. That's another 10 hours of work. That is again why I keep saying there should be a way to have just a model pass and everyone says yeah you can do it but no one yet has shown how. I already used all the passes offered by VRay and none, 0 of them, does that function so I don't expect any help here just want to show why is so important to have a render pass with a JUST 3D model and than fx and rest on other render passes. I apologize in advance for my frustration but you guys render your stuff too, you know how you feel when you lose a 2 day render. I would send it to a render farm but its ridiculously expensive this render would cpst me 600 bukcs or something based on Chaos Cloud pricing so I have to wait and render myself.

looks like a issue with Hitfilm and the way you are working - the passes look normal to me.
What do you mean export a 3d model? Can you can import a FBX into Hitfilm ? Hitfilm is really a hobby software as well, try fusion free version while you learn how to comp the passes and use the imported 3d model to make masks

Cant you just use the RGB main pass and the alpha to put it over the backplate>?

That was really smart suggestion, Alpha thing you said. I would do that but my alpha channel looks like this (see pic below). Meaning not just that I get all blown white alpha but I can even see smoke in alpha which , again, does not leave me with what I keep saying I need, a 3D model of this airplane entirely SOLOED in the mix. So that ALPHA is not really alpha its like all of it in the scene and than fog in alpha channel. So you get it all white. Well After Effects than is hobby software too but regardless they should both get this done. I tried it in Nuke too. Same issues, it doesn't matter. Passes look right? yeah to me too until I try to combine them. They ARE right I never said they are not it's just that they become translucent so I can't use them as such. Hitfilm unlike After Effects can actually import 3d models and has avery well developed 3d compositing workflow but that' the whole point of me buying 3Ds Max and Vray+Phoenix FD. So I can do all heavy lifting there and than cust do composite in any program. I mean I need this airplane to 1. Has a pass with just itself in it, 2. to not be occluded by smoke. Like imagine a render pass that would export just one thing. This is harder to explain than I ever imagined but imagine when you go to 3DsMax and select an object and press HIDE UNSELECTED. You nd up with just that one thing in the mix right? If we VRay could do that in a pass it would be amazing feature. That's all I am saying. Also I know I have ton to learn and I am studying all day but I still thought with all the passes I shouldn't be having translucency issues and also I should have control over fire, smoke, airplane, backdrop...that is what passes are for. But still my best pass is final RGB out from max. Also VRay exported this bluish fog/atmosphere as a backdrop which is INSANE to me because how is that not on a separate pass? That is why I have a background pass.....ohhhhh I now have this background I can't remove.

I tried to use OBJECT ID which gave me semi transparent black background and a colored airplane. I used Chroma Key to remove that color and keep the airplane (basic masking) but than again you can see the background through the actual model. I don't know really. If there is a solution someone on this forum should know. If not I'll just do beauty passes in future and call it a day. That worked with my clients so far, I just thought maybe this render pass hype would give me more control but it doesn't seem so. Because really all I wanted is to have 3 passes to get the job done in this project. OPne for the model, one for the fire and one for the smoke ( which is just one Atmosphere pass by V ray inverted for getting them separated, fire and smoke that is). Idk I am just trying to figure out how to do that. That's all. I hope that makes sense as what I am trying to do should be on paper super simple but I am missing something apparently. Anyway I trully appreciate your advices and all your patience with me until I figure out my mistakes and learn how to do this properly.
