  • Xmesh as source emitter

I have an alembic with a changing point count that refuses to export correctly. It exports fine as an Xmesh, but Xmesh is not accepted as an emitter.

Any suggestions or help much appreciated.

Hey, could you share a bit more information - are you using the Maya native exporter for a Phoenix mesh? What hapoens when you do that, i.e. what is not correct about the mesh?

Here is a video on exporting alembic from Phoenix in Maya - are you following these precisely? https://docs.chaos.com/display/PHX4MAYA/How+to+Videos

    Cheers!

Thanks for the response Svetlin. I have a mesh from TyFlow in Max exported to Maya via Xmesh because Alembic doesn't maintain the material IDs in a changing point count. It is a tearing flesh effect.

I have that in Maya as an Xmesh and I want to add the blood splatters etc - but Phoenix was throwing errors saying that it is not a polygon object.

I tried to get the alembic to work but went back to the Xmesh and found this "Save as Polymesh" in the options. Turning that on makes the error go away. I am simulating with that export as the emitter now and it seems to be working fine.

Ahaa, glad you found a way! Will take a note to check what are these errors that appeared for you. Do they appear even if you just simulate a tapwater preset and try to export that?

I'll try that and let you know.

I have another issue affecting this simulation. I notice that I can't interact with the alembic (or Xmesh). The spotted mesh is the emitter and the grey surrounding is the alembic. It will only emit when excluded from the scene.

OK - new scene and the tap sim - no issues. There must be something wacky in the original scene. I have the whole thing working now. Thank you for the assistance.

            PS: it looks awesome!
