  • Meniscus effect with liquid in cup

    Hi,

I am simulating a scene involving coffee in a cup. The coffee preset along with tutorials I've found have led to pretty good results so far except for where the liquid meets the edges of the cup. I've tested at a variety of scene scales and grid resolutions but I can never simulate an accurate type of meniscus effect, where the liquid is slightly pulled up the walls of the coffee mug, creating a concave top surface to the liquid. Are there any settings that can influence this effect or are there any work arounds anyone has found to achieve this. Without this the liquid just doesn't look right when it renders.

Thank you in advance for any help!

    Hello,

Here are a few things that you can try.

    1. You can enable the wetting parameter and play with the sticky liquid settings. You need a small amount of viscosity for the sticky liquid option to take effect.
    2. Additionally, you can experiment with the surface tension.
    3. You can create a distance texture and add the cup object in it. Set the near color to white and the far color to black. You can use this texture as a displacement and raise the mesh vertices where they touch the object.
I made a short video. You can see it here: https://gyazo.com/fe0a5cc47689a682e6f437f5779360b9
    4. There is a V-ray edge texture that can plugged into the liquid's material bump slot. It will emulate this effect

Options 3 and 4 can be done after the simulation is finished.

    5. One last option is to add a body force that attracts the liquid towards the walls of the cup. It will create a small bump towards the edge:
