  • Ocean surface with splashing objects

    Hi all,

I am simulating a pier being smashed by a boat, and I need to create the ocean surface with splashes and foam. (3dsmax)

But I don't even know where to start, creating an ocean surface.

The pier is simulated as mParticles, and then baked as lots of animated boxes (they have a fixed buoyancy level, so they bob naturally up and down about where the surface would be).

    Thanks for any help,
    - Jonas

do you need large ocean surface (visible skyline), or the camera is looking into relatively small area?
with the official version you can create scenes like this.
currently we are working over set of tools allowing pipelines for any ocean simulations including large ocean surface, but not everything is ready to use.

Dear Ivaylo, thanks a lot for the reply. Yes, that type of size and resolution would be perfect!

How do I set it up? I can't find tutorials about a pre-defined water surface.

      Thanks!

I think the resolution is about 100M cells, for more details see here . I hope Tommi can share some extra details, like the spf settings and other.

          Thanks again, Ivaylo.

I have read that thread, but what I need right now is just a tutorial on how to create a water surface that I can drop things into.

I have done water fountains, beer glass etc, but I don't know how to set up a lake/ocean surface without spending 20 simulation hours "filling the bath tub".

Any help on that would be greatly appreciated.

          Thanks,
          - Jonas

the most common technique is described here, initial fill up of liquids. if you are using the official build, you have to use 100000 instead 100 for step 4.
