  • Multiple problems with ocean sim render

    Hi

I'm trying to render a ship in ocean. The setup used to work well in a scene I created around a year ago. The old setup used V-ray 3.6 something. Now I have upgraded to 4.02.05. I'm still rendering with the CPU renderer.

    Now I have multiple problems:
    • For one there are some strange artefacts in the reflections (on all rendernodes)
    • there are no motionblur in certain areas (depending on the node, but as far as I can see in windows programs&features all nodes are using phoenix fd .3.11.00 and vray 4.02.05, 3dsmax 2019.2)
    • There are some hard edges in the transition from the sim box to the infinte ocean
I'm hoping you could give me some clues as to what is going on, and if there are any bugs you know that has been fixed in nightlies (any particular builds you would recommend?)

    Hey,

You can check the nightly changelog in each day's directory on nightlies.chaosgroup.com - it gets updated every day with what we do.

I would guess that the hard edge would be fixed in the nightlies, however we haven't seen the reflection and lack of motion blur issue - if you could send a scene over with just the ocean container and one cache file, it would be very helpful. I suspect these could be caused by an issue with the foam tex, but just guessing...

    Cheers!

Svetlin.Nikolov Thanks for the quick reply!!

I managed to fix the problems with some render nodes not having the correct motion blur/velocity. I installed the latest nightly build from 06.10.2018. There must have been some difference between them before, even though the version number looked like the same.

I still have the problem where the reflections look strange. I replaced my ocean material with a new simple v-ray material, grey with white for reflections. I still see the same issue, almost like there is something wrong with the normals, but the normal render pass looks fine?

...And it turns out the problem in the reflections was caused by having "ground projection" on in the VRayHDRI. I don't know why I had it on in the first place, but I think it gave a slightly different result now compared to my old scene regardless. The only problem left to solve is the transition between the simulation and the infinite ocean.

Could it be that my previous sim with this setup was slightly higher up, and was therefore not affected in the same way by wrongly having "ground projection" turned on?

I havent figured out why the border doesn't blend nicely with my ocean yet.
I'm attaching the simfile along with frame 100.
If you have a chance to take a look at it, or you see something obvious I've missed it would be greatly appreciated!

Here you can see the border seam a bit better up close (the line running back along the right side of the image).
The rest of my problems were all user errors, and this might be too, but I haven't figured out what it is.

                Hello,

If you turn off the Fade Above Velocity in the Displacement settings it should render correctly.
