  • For new computer, simming fine but crashes to desktop on render

I've been eager to try out my new workstation for a bit on some simulations stuff so I was very sad when I encountered a strange situation that didn't happen on my nearly 10 year old previous workstation. I CAN simulate and render liquid, but when I simulate and try to render FIRE, it crashes to desktop. I was using the same software on my old computer and this didn't ever happen so that's odd. If I load my fire sim into a VRayVolumeGrid it renders fine, so that is my current work around, but it's annoying. I tried installing Phoenix 4 but said it needed a new license which we don't have yet.
I'm using Phoenix 3.14.01 Nightly and Max 2020.3, VRay 3.70.01 (yes I know Vray Next is out! )
    Windows 10
    Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super
    AMD Ryzen 3960X
    64 GB Ram

    Hey,

A million dollar question would be - Which Phoenix 3.14 nightly? (you can check from the Simulation rollout -> About -> Build ID)

We gotta make the crash happen here, so let's also try something we can't make any differently than you - what if you create a Fire toolbar preset over a sphere and render that? Is it still crashing?

It's Build ID 2019072029350. Yup, still crashes with the Fire preset in the toolbar! I've also tried making a simple shere fire sim by hand too with same result. All it gets to is "Ray starting rendering" with 0% CPU usage. It sits there spinning and freezes up eventually crashing to desktop. A possible variable is that I am remoted into my workstation. I know some programs like Nuke and Substance Painter used to not even run when using Windows Remote Desktop but now we are using another program which is much more stable. However I haven't had any issues running max and rendering in it, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Indeed, there seems to be something wrong with the nightly from this date.

Can you try with the latest Phoenix 3.14 nightly build? Seems to be working correctly in here.
