  • Phoenix FD : camera in motion but the infinite ocean does not move

    Hello,

I am currently working on a simple boat simulation.

I have my camera move but when I render it looks like the infinite ocean generated by phoenix with the phoenix oceantexture doesn't move as if my camera was still which creates a strange effect when my boat enters the field of view.
It looks like it is sailing sideways as the ocean reacts as if the camera is not moving, but the boat is decreasing in size as the camera moves away.

Do you have a solution to help me?

Huh, this sounds very strange. You mean that the waves look as if they are locked to the camera?

I remember we fixed such an issue very long time ago - 3-4, or maybe more. Are you currently using Phoenix 4? Can you install the very latest Phoenix nightly build and see if it makes a difference:

Btw, are you using Max or Maya?

    Cheers!

      Hello,

Here is the link to the video illustrating my problem :
      https://youtu.be/8-1HFyrxytM

You can see that the ocean reacts as if the camera was fixed while the boat reacts with the camera movement which creates a strange effect in the shot.

My phoenix version is 4.41.00 and I'm on 3Ds max.

Ahhh, okay, can you check the Mapping of the Ocean texture in its Coordinates rollout below its main settings - is Source set to World XYZ?

Should be the same as World XYZ, thank you!

Just tried an Ocean toolbar preset here and zooming out the camera renders correctly, so there should be something specific we should look for. Can you try this preset with your camera? If it works for you too, we can exclude the camera from the list of suspects.

Also one more question - are you using V-Ray displacement for the ocean, or Phoenix's own displacement in the Rendering rollout of the Simulator?

For the move I created an instance of the "PhoenixFDOceanTexture" material I sent you earlier.

I just did a quick test in low resolution and I have the same problem with the "setup an ocean with selected object" preset
It looks like the camera is not moving.

Oh, so it's most likely something with the camera. We are getting closer. Are you using Physical camera or regular Target camera? What if you create a different type of camera with default settings - would the problem still appear?

In my scene I use a PhysCamera, I just did a test with a simple camera without a target and here is the result, I have the same strange problem.

Hmmm, would it be possible to send the scene over?

Yess, got it! It's something with Phoenix and V-Ray GPU - the problem does not happen on CPU. Will see if there is a quick fix or any workaround so you can keep working and will ping you as soon as I have any news...

Oh nonnnn I hope there is a solution because on GPU I'm already at about 5 min per frame so with the CPU it's not going to be possible... :/
