  • OceanTex smaller ripples not phasing?

    Hi guys,

We're having an issue where it appears the ripples in the OceanTex aren't changing over time (phasing) but just stretching around - the same shapes keep reappearing. See the included link to an animated crop of a render below - then below that footage examples of rippling changing over time as one would expect. This is with OceanTex applied as a vector displacement to a PFD sim box set to 'ocean' mode. We had also included a question about it with the previously posted scene file email regarding the ocean cropping issue as it renders from frame 1, so no need to reply to both.

    Thanks very much!

crop of our render - smaller ripples noticably stretch around but don't phase and appear to remain static:

(we've highlighted one example of what to look for. if you look at the lower left foreground, you'll start to see this all over. scrubbing back and forth makes it even easier to see)

    shows all wave sizes phasing:

    Hi,
really the movie looks weird, by default the ocean extension does not look like this. can you post a screenshot with the texture settings?

Sure Ivaylo. See attached. There is an animated camera map in the sky that changes the reflection over time. Also worth noting is that I've only simmed frame 1 and at super low quality, and then set input cache to extrapolate if missing - not sure if that has anything to do with it?

the seems to be ok, i think we will need the scene for investigation. the single frame technique is widely used (many times no simulation is needed) and it's not causing problems

can you tell us the revision number? the problem is reproduced, still not sure what is causing it, the revision number is just for our convenience.

                  Hi guys,

I'm still seeing the non-phasing problem with the latest build. Here is another sample rendered from v25572:
                  http://vfxfactory.com/movies/water_phasing_testC.mov

Note: the environment/lighting is animated, however one can see the static smaller ripples through the larger waves that move by.)

ok, because i'm not sure about your build , just enable the phoenix atmosphere in the environment panel, this is the actual reason for the problem. i didn't mention this before, because it is our mistake not yours. it's normal to expect that the atmosphere has nothing common with the mesh, however historically phoenix is fire simulator and we use the atmosphere to inform the objects for pre render events, disabling it you stopped the notification and the mesh was not invalidated before the rendering and etc....

roger that - will do. sure, i remember good ole phoenix fire - used to use it back in the day. alrighty, i'll give that a go. thx again Ivaylo.. and thanks for catching the env switch. i forgot to re-enable it in rpmanager - i'm guessing it enables in the env panel by default when a new pfd is added to the scene.

well, glad to read this, and for us remains the question why the latest build didn't help

i'm sure you have other hotter tweaks on the front burner. if nothing else, we could probably always just be required to keep the env switch checked - we're certainly used to it with other volumetric plugins that will not render at all if respective env entries are unchecked ;]
