  • V-Ray exception.

Please see the attacked screenshot. This error turns up from time to time, and I have never been able to reproduce it so I just post the error here in hopes that someone have experienced it before and knows how to fix it.

The error mentions GI which I have not enabled in this scene.

    Hello,

Which version of V-Ray and Phoenix do you use? There was a workaround for it when you delete the volume grid atmosphere from the environment dialog, immediately save the scene and close max, and then it should be fine after reopening.

The fix seams to have solved it. Thank you so much! Got 2000 frames to render over the weekend so I started to sweat a bit.. hehe.

Do you know what causes the error? Have people been able to reproduce it? Often it happens when I do the phoenix calulation and then saves the file with a new name, like from 001 to 002 and dont copy the cache files to just redirect it. Tried to reproduce that with a blank scene, and nothing happened. So I don't know how to prevent it. I initially fixed it by exporting everything to a new scene and the error was gone - for a moment. It suddenly came back up right before I was ready to hit render for the weekend.

I'm using a nighlty, don't know exact version but its from 28'th of sept.
      I'm using Vray- 3.20.02.

this is a known issue, it's caused by the vray grid conflicts, it should be fixed few weeks ago.
however, i have a suggestion about the lighting, the ship is too flat, you need GI or dome light. if you use GI, disable the GI of the foam (vray properties)

It's very hard to reproduce this one while debugging and we have attempted several fixes, the last one from a week ago, so your nightly might have it, or might not... The fixes are in the volume grid though, so it's about the V-Ray nightly.

In case you are sure you don't use VRayVolumeGrid in your scenes, please watch out if its atmosphere appears next to the PhoenixFD one and give us a shout.

Got too many frames to render, and I've only got this one shot because of time constraints so I'm a bit afraid of using GI atm.
The lightning is the last thing I'm working on, so hopefully it will get better, hehe. I also got extratex- AO to give it some depth later in post.

Anyways, here is the last couple of renders, so its getting a bit better. The new foam map is awesome btw. Still on low settings, so ignore all the noise.
The container models are a bit crap, but I had no time making them better, so crappy normalmaps etc on them. Hopefully noone will notice since all of them are moving with the rolling of the boat, sliding back and worth, and rocking side to side. Next scene will have over 100 containers falling overboard, so it will become a bit of a challenge for Phoenix I guess (not gonna calculate all of them, just the hero containers), and you'll hear more from me.. hehe. The ending of this scene comes with a small cliffhanger though since you'll see a few of them going overboard already, not reaching the water though before it goes to black.

On the second image, you see the rogue particles that I've talked about. But hopefully it works in this scene seeing as its a bit of wind here.

glad you like it, but it seems to be broken on this image, seems like it is stretched somehow

Yes, I've noticed. But I've tested a small animation with it, and its looking ok when adding some motionblur and when its in motion. So better with it than without it for that extra detail.

i was unable to reproduce the issue.
can you tell me the "use original non displaced vertices" checkbox state?
and try to switch it to the opposite
