  • Max insta crashes when trying to render sims with V-Ray

    I am using phoenix 3.00.01 on max 2016 with V-Ray 3.40

When rendering a basic flame with scanline it works fine, but when i try to do the same with v-ray max instantly exits to desktop without any error message.

Any idea of what could cause this?

    EDIT: changed max version.

    Wow,

Would it be possible to share a scene that has the issue?

    Thanks!

Sure, but its absolutely nothing to it. just added a box as a emitter and everything else is done without any adjustments and it still crashes. i did see after many tests that an error message pops up and last for a fraction of a second, but after many tries i managed to screenshot it.

Hmm, it doesn't crash here, so the next step would be sending a crash dump, if you manage to locate it - it should be either in C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\CrashDumps, or C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp.

Hope we can catch the reason this way. Thanks again!

It does not seem to create a crash dump. last crash dump is from 3 days ago. Any other things i could try?

I think we will roll out max 2017 on our servers soon so i may go ahead and just be early with that and see if it works then.

In case it doesn't leave a dmp, would it be possible to send over the Phoenix log from C:\PhoenixFD? You could also try turning off Phoenix rendering options to see what would make a difference - e.g. turning off fire completely, or turning smoke color off (Based On=Disabled), or turning of 'Lighting', so we'd know which part creates the issue. Also, do you have any other plugins apart from V-Ray and Phoenix installed? I see there are a lot of maps and materials layed out - what if you remove those just in case so they won't be evaluated?

Thanks very much for helping to pinpoint this issue!

There you said it. I works when turning off the lightning.

              Here are the logs: https://fil.email/OsYP

If there is anything more you need me to test out, let me know.

Looking forward to playing with 3.0

Hmmm, there is a chance we fixed this in some changes we did after the release. I hope during the coming week or two we'd be ready to make the 3.0/Max nightly builds visible again so you'd be able to check it there, but right now I'll see what I can do here with the scene. Thanks very much for the help!
