  • Crispy background ocean water

    Hi guys,

I'm new with Phoenix / Vray and working actual on a trailer for a fishing game with ships. I'm very satisfied with my boat watersim / foam but I got this major problem. If the camera is on a small angle to the ocean, the water in the background gets very crispy and noisy. Is there any trick how I can get rid of this? Please see the picture!

    Greetings

    Hey,

Have you tried adjusting the ocean subdivisions from the Rendering panel?

      Hey,

no didn't try this, can I change this value without resimulating the scene?

Sure - all settings in the Rendering panel are applied over the already simulated caches at preview or render time and would not need simulating again.

          Hey Dirk,
          excellent job with this sim!!!
At what speed is your ship moving. I've been experimenting for long time but can never get a stern wave system. My boats* move at about 15kn and get dissent bow wave, but nothing behind the stern. It could be a stern shape dependent thing, but your picture looks very real and in compliment with hydrodynamics too.
And the foam/splash is so real as well. Did you start with presets or form scratch?
I've tried both to no avail - the foam/plash is either too much or not enough but consistently grainy at best. would you be willing to share your secret ingredient for cooking* such a realistic foam?

              Hey Baro,

thanks for your feedback, there is no special ingredient. I used the sample ship file from chaosgroup as basic and change some of the stuff. For our interested, I upload the videoscene to vimeo :

I guess, one of the major difference between you and my scene is the shape of the ship. You had a very flat front side of the ship, my ship is more sharp . I will post later my settings for the scene.

              Greetings

                  nicely done video
I also had good results whit the sample scene, but that boat moves with 25kn, the sim setting were for v2.2 and units 1u=20cm.
I've been unlucky reproducing such a good results using v.3 presets or starting from scratch.
the bow on my ship is pretty dull indeed since it is slow steamer (14-17kn max speed):

and the bow wave is what is typical for such shape:

it is the stern wave system on you boat that I envy*.

is not untypical, only that it is a uneventful and boating and I want to be able to fake it

                    Hey,

here you can see my settings and the trawler shiphull that I used for simulating the water. For the speed I used the same as the sample file. Hope that helps you a bit.

the sample scene is reworked for 3.0 and the stern wave is handled by a source that represents the propellers, it's really surprisingly how many users forget them

                        Hey Ivaylo,

I did'nt forget the sorce for represents the propellers. I tested it first with such a source but wasn't quite satisfied with the results, so I came up with simulating it only with a mainhull source and liked the result of it.
