  • Animation flickering

I'm using Phoenix grid to create very low density fog. Not running any simulations, but just increasing the minimum smoke opacity to 0.02 to get evenly filled simulator.
Everything else looks really good, but when the camera is pulling back, the lighting starts to flicker a lot.

    Scene contains:
    Simulator
    3D text
    8 vray plane lights

    I have tried everything.
    -different Scattering modes
    -different Light Cache speedup settings
-changing Step% and Shadow step% to extreme low values
-created a Cutter Geometry, to keep camera outside of the volume
-used $.skiptransp= option to override opacity threshold

    ...still flickering.

    Version used: 3.05.02 Nightly

Hope Svetlin can give an answer but that does look cool! Sorry am not much help

When I Had smoke flicker in the past I used to set light cache setting for the smoke to 0. Looks like you have tried that.

Thanks. Yep, light cache at any value doesnt help. Lower values does help with the overall quality, but it doesn't remove the flickering.

      Any other ideas? Svetlin?
...or am I just trying to do something not suitable for Phoenix?

        Hey,

Can't really say - the settings seem fine, so it could be something with the setup that Phoenix didn't expect... Would it be possible to send the scene to Support?

        Thanks!

Turn lightcache = off and use raytraced gi solution. Or turn on probabilistic volumetric. It will be noisy, but at least there's nothing to flicker.
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

              Hey,

Yet another idea - if you've tried $.skiptransp, have you tried setting its twin brother $.stoptransp to more than 0.999, like e.g. 0.9999?

Paul: I tried with raytraced gi already no difference. Probabilistic shading is too noisy or blotchy.

I'll try $.stoptransp option too. Let's see how it goes.

As soon as I have some time from other projects, I'll send the scene too.

                Thanks!

Did you try to lower the light cutoff?

I'm getting the exact same issue on a project, was there ever a solution to this?

Absolutely, a scene will be very helpful. We don't have such an issue logged, so it's either a matter of settings, or something that's escaped our attention since using the info from this thread so far, we couldn't repro it.

                        Cheers!
