Hey guys,
V-Ray 5, update 1 is now available for download from our website.
New key features:
Masking in VFB - you can now use any of V-Ray's masking render elements - Cryptomatte, MultiMatte and Object/ Render/ Material IDs- to select and fine-tune parts of your render. Mind that masks can be added only on color corrections and folders.
Additive Dome Lights - proper additive lighting from Dome lights. Perfect for multiple environments in a single render controlled in Light Mix.
Progressive caustics (WIP) - easier to set up, without the need for pre-calculated photon maps. There are some limitations like no support for DR and Bucket sampler. Please check the docs for more information.
Chaos Cosmos - Chaos Cosmos content library is a large collection of high-quality, render-ready 3D assets that quickly add believable entourage to your interior or exterior scene. With native V-Ray materials, they are easy to customize with the 3ds Max Material Editor.
Advanced material override - The new material override option preserves a scene's original opacity, bump, refraction and self-illumination, giving you even more creative control. (we already have a request for reflections preserve as well, so it will come later)
Improved V-Ray Material in viewport - Representations of V-Ray materials in 3ds Max viewports are now closer to the final render, giving you a better idea of how your results will look. (if something doesn't look as expected, please check how the Physical Materials behave, because we are limited by Max viewport)
New V-Ray Material translucency modes - Create true translucent materials with the updated V-Ray Material. Now with built-in volumetric subsurface scattering, it’s easier than ever to render realistic skin, plastic, wax, and more. (not supported in V-Ray GPU yet, support coming in Update 2 probably)
Legacy modes will still work for old scenes, but for new ones you'll see only the new modes.
Аuto-translation of Physical Materials - Autodesk's Physical Materials are auto-translated to V-Ray materials without additional conversions. (limited to Max only, Standalone / V-Ray GPU / Chaos Cloud support will come later)
Light Cache calculated on the GPU (WIP) - no more differences between the LC pass and the V-Ray GPU renderer, faster as well. V-Ray GPU IPR can now work with LC for consistent results between IPR and Production.
A tiny reminder that we read the Wishlist section almost every day. Please use the sticky threads on top, they help us to prioritize your requests a lot
I've highlighted some other interesting additions the deserve attention from the release notes:
