Also, after some testing, by ticking "Use local subdivs", I get better render times, and no noticeable different in noise in certain scenes,

IDK, that automates V-Ray now and reverts it back to the old days, doesn't it? It'll smartly assign the subdivs per object internally.Bobby Parker

I had some more time to do some digging, and it appears that the vrayextratex was causing almost double the render times, which I've never really experienced in the past. I mainly use the extratex for amblient occulsion (vray dirt), and never really noticed any significant render times. So I was quite surprised when I removed this to find render times drop massivly.
I now either don't use AO, or just render another pass by itself.
Just thought I'd update in case anyone needed that pointer

We sometimes need an AO Dirt pass so I wanted to have a go. VrayDirt (3.6) has a default radius of 10. A quick test at radius 10 rendered in 24 seconds vs radius 1000 in 55 seconds, about 2x as slow for me which seems to be what`s being said.
Turning off Dirt and using a radius of 1000 in Vray GI Ambient occlusion was 26 secs and looked much more `even` versus much heavier black shadows with VrayDirt left at default black/white. Changing the VrayDirt occluded black to a more mid grey 100 not only sped up rendering to 38 secs but also looks much closer to GI AO.
At least on the crappy scene I tested, although given the state of some of my scenes all data should be taken with a pinch of salt.
