  • "Max material wrapper" function?

I know some other people have posted before the need to render a scene
with Vray materials and lights using the default scanline. Sometimes a viewport image is not good enough but a Vray render is overkill, because no matter how fast of a setting for Vray I can never render a frame in 1-3 seconds like in scanline.

Is there a way to render with scanline and have the materials showing somehow as expected?

I guess I want some kind of utility that does the job of a 'max material wrapper' just for rendering but then it leaves my scene and materials unaffected so I can do the final output in Vray.

I know some peopel on this forum have made some material converter scripts but I think they where only default max>vray and not te other way around.

Is vray responsible for every output you do? Instead of wanting everything to be done for you by your renderer of choice maybe you could learn maxscript and make your own converter, it's really not that hard. In another post you seem to think that it is vray that needs to be fixed to work with everything else why not everything else to be fixed to work with vray, I fail to see why you think a renderer owes you so much....

Some limited support for the scanline renderer can be added, but we don't have immediate plans for this. You can add it to the wishlist section though.

      Best regards,

If you create two material libraries, one for scanline materials and the other for VRay materials, as long as you are consistent with your naming you can switch your scene between scanline and VRay by opening one of the libraries and clicking on 'update from library' at the top of the material/map browser.

I use this method for switching between materials with interpolated glossies for stills and non-interpolated materials for animation.

Vray is responsible for final output, but I'm a product designer, meaning I have to show concepts/work in progress/view captures for annotation/etc. sometimes very fast and sometimes for vary many concepts that I don't have time to make final renderings and a scanline rendering does the trick

Maybe..., I thought I would ask here first see if there is some alternative solution.

You also seem to fail to see that Vray is a Plugin of 3DSMax and not the other way around. The entire reason I use Max for viz. work is because it gives me the flexibility of choosing the plugins that work for me. I also would like those plugins to work seamlessly with the host application (Max) and with whatever other plugins I use on my workflow. Seemless integration is a good thing, it has nothing to do with owing me anything. Sorry if this has offended you, I 'm just trying to go about my work man and pointing out where I see hiccups with my some of my tools.

Thanks Vlado, I'll make sure I put it there, so that you know I don't expect much, even some approximation that is better that being pitch black would do.

Hey Dan, that's a great idea, I think I could use that for now, until I come out with a more fail-proof way. The only problem with this method is that if you change a setting from the shader saved in the library that obviously will be very different, like the diffuse color, then once you swap libraries that shader will have the old color again...

Thanks for all the feedback guys!
