  • desperately need help wih leather material

Can anybody help me with my problem?
I need to recreate leather material for my upcomming sofa renders. I did some attempts wiht vray material and bitmap leather textures but it wasn't all right. The renders with my material settings was somehow lifeless even I have tryed some good studio lightening setups. I guess the problem is connected with properly set-up material, something like human skin, SSS or something similar. But I have never tryed to simulate something like that and I don't have any experiences on that problematic. Please can enybody help me?

Here is the picture of material and look I would like to achieve.
Sofa is designed by Mathias Hoffmann for de Sede.

are you concerned with creating that kind of intricate seam work? or just getting the sheen of the leather to look right?

its a pretty simple setup...bump map for the wrinkles and reflection map with .6-.8 glossyness. The bigger factor is gonna be your lighting setup. those chairs int the pictures look awesome b/c of the lighting.

I just want to recreate that leather material look.
I guess I will have to play more with lights in my scene as you seggested.
I will definitely post my results later, when it's all done.

jaro...get a leather texture map somewhere, then its displacement with glossy reflections on the shader
        that should do the trick

I agree. Not too difficult. Just try it and post your results and then you'll get all the help you need.

When I first saw that picture I was going to say that it looks like you have it spot on!

try this thread. theres a free scene with a decent leather setup. was setup in a prior vray version though, so dont know how it will look now, though should look fine.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Make fun of me for not seeing tears, staples....

I sometimes add that to renders to makes them look real. Like the white border on a Polaroid.

I'll try your tip. I just need to find proper texture map and try some renders with displacement, because I have never tried that feature before (I'm pretty new to vray advanced ). I will definitely post my results later.

Hi there,I was boring doing my interior scene today...
so I browse trough this forum for some new tips...when i came to this post....after finish reading it ..im decided to model the sofa on your picture to practice my rusted modeling skills.........so here's my result after around 1 hour ...modeling ,tecture, lighting & some post in photoshop(Dof & noise) ...still not satisfy with the modeling & lighting though
                      Imap with Lc ,
                      min5,max-2
                      render time-7min

the material is actually simple (Hight.g-0.9 Reflect.g-0.75 & a skin bumpmap in the bump slot..)

hope you done mind of me modelling this ....cool design for the sofa BTW...& sorry for my poor english..

Oh man, thats cool. I mean the time you needed to recreate photograph I have posted. Seems like your rusted modeling skills are not so rusty . But may I ask you a question? I would like to know how to create those seams with leather material at the sofas you have modeled? Because I'm pretty new to 3DS MAX modeling ( I've been working only with CAD modelars before ) I had big troubles to recreate them.

Thank you guys for material tips. I'm getting much closer to the result. Testing it now

Wow - minus the color being slightly off -that's pretty freakin impressive. Nice work on the seams too- how did you do all this???

Yeah, that is a really cool chair.

ad-max Nice job on the modeling and rendering. I think the arms swoop up a bit more in the front and the lower back part flares out a bit more too. Maybe you could share some wire shots to help _jaro

Yes, you are absolutely right Joh, that will be a great boost to my work.
I already did have some attempts to recreate that, but I'm not very satified with the result. ( It's so different to model in MAX, compared to e.g. Solid Works ).
And also other projects are taking my time. I'll try to find some modeling tutorials. If not, I'll have to come to result only by myself.
