  • memory question

    hi,ive been rendering the neo visual test scene on a couple of lappies at work,a centrino 1.6 with 512 ram and a p4 3.2ht with 1g ram.

    centrino=14.30 mins
    p4=17.30 mins!!

    now i think this result is wrong,p4 should be quicker?
    i have upgraded the ram on the p4 lappy(correct type).what i have done is to render the scene on the p4 with just 512 of ram,same time.it also uses the same amount of ram(about 330mb) with 512 and 1g of ram.
    is this right or if more physical ram is added shouldnt it use that and less virtual ram.
    if any one can help it would much appreciated.

    Centrino Procs are really fast... the results are not surprising. Check this out...

    BTW... if your P4 is HT, make sure that HT is on.

        if the scene fits into the physical memory there is no benefit of additional ram.

            thats the thing,the scene while rendering is 330 ish mg physical mem and 330 ish virtual, whether theres 1g or 512m.surly it would make use of the extra phys. ram, wouldnt it?

              forget about the virtual memory display in the task manager. it doesn't really mean anything. you know that you have not enough memory if the harddrive is busy during rendering.

                i was looking at the stats in the rendering properties rollout.is this not accurate?
                i here what your saying though if you cant here the hard drive its not using it.
                the bench test link above was interesting,looks like we'll all be going out and buying dual p4 m machines
