  • bringing me up to date

I wondered if anyone has a utility/script to bring old vray projects bang up to date for working with the latest build of Vray. If not, it might be an idea for the Chaos team. We are still running 1.09r at the moment, but have major concerns about upping to the latest builds as many of our projects have been running for many many months.

In the past, I have attempted to upgrade, but quickly gone back when I discovered just how many changes had been made which affected rendertimes/render brightness etc. Lots of my projects have lots of materials and lights, each of which would need tweaking to work well with newer builds.

Obviously, any conversion attempt would have to be a 'best approximate' - i.e. it won't be *exactly* the same - but it would be of great use to bring me (and others I am sure) out of the 19th century.
    Kind Regards,

Ah! I didn't realise there was a new version of this. I really am out-of-date!
      Thanks

That will only do the materials (obviously) which is only going to be part of your problem.
Things like qmc, and subdivs for interpolation, which used to be at a default of 50 can now be taken down as low as 8 and get similar results.
Same with the IR map, the HSph Subdivs and the Interp Samples, can be lowered significantly with similar results.

You probabaly know all this, but just making sure

There isnt a script around that I am aware of to do the above, but im sure a "script nerd" could whip something up in no time.
Mind you changing these settings is far less tedious than changing a bunch of material settings. Which should be automated for you now anyway thanks to that script.

Good luck and welcome to the Future

          Thanks DaForce for clarifying.

Are there any nerds out there who have a spare bit of time to write such a script? If you live in Oxfordshire, I'll buy you a pint! (bitter of course!)

maybe marc lorenz' vray preset manager helps you a bit...
              http://plugins.angstraum.at/vraypm/index.htm
you can save presets (you'd have to find your own project specific values anyway i guess) and load them later on/ in other files

The default HSph is 50, and IntSamp is 20. Can you share with me the numbers you use, because I have not had much luck in bringing the render time down. Even with a new file, no materials, the render times are far greater then 1.09. Not good.

Well for quick test renders, drop the preset to LOW and change the Hsph to 35 and the Interp Samp to 15.
Then just work your way up from there.

I tend to use LC and QMC now days anywayz.

Also if you can (in a new post) maybe show renders from 1.09 and 1.46 of the same scene and what render times you got with both. Should be able to provide some more accurate help for you.

Thanks DaForce, I posted some images in the general section. I was able to come close to the 1.09 render time, but the quality was very noisy. I want to get on that 1.47 bandwagon but dont see the light yet.
