  • Time to upgrade my workstation....Dell suggestions?

    Hi all,

My workstation has been doing fine for me, particularly with the newer versions of Vray. Currently i am using 3dsmax 2020 and Vray 5.0. Things have come a long way since 10 years ago. Now, 5-10 minute render times are just fine for me.

For various reason, i need to purchase a new workstation. Right now i am using a Dell T7500 with Dual Xeon 3.47 ghz (x5690) processors and 96 gb RAM. With an SSD drive and a Quadro M4000 card. I am driving a 4k new monitor. I prepare mostly 5-10 renders for each project (mostly swimming pool and landscape renders) and i usually use progressive rendering and set the time per render to 5-20 minutes. And, it works really well for me.

I am a little lost with all of the newer models of Dell workstations (i am a dell fan) and the various video card choices, etc. I realize setting a budget is a good place to start. I looked at Bobby's setup and unless i am wrong that is one pricey setup! Should i expect a really noticeable improvement over my current setup? Or only incremental? Probably my biggest issues that could use improvement are viewport and interface performance and draft rendering.

So for somewhere between $1.5k-$3k, what would you suggest (i typically purchase used from eBay with good success). 2 procs with a low ghz? 1 proc with a high ghz? Which Dell model? Chip? what kind of video card?

Here is a typical render for me.

TIA for any ideas. Kinda baffling on how to figure this out.

    -Sean

Personally, i have never buy any computer from reseller like Dell, HP, .. I know that their computers have been heavily test, with great ventilation system and so on.
But you can get as powerfull and even more powerfull for less the price they've charged. Nowadays, everybody can get a powerfull computer with high end components and they are extremely reliable.

I've been working on Intel machine for a decade but last year, i advised the company where i'm working to go with AMD Ryzen. Not a problem so far. Everything working great.
We wanted to buy several computers for less than 2000€ by PC (Without GPU because we already have them).

    We went for:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 3950x (16cores- 32 threads). But today the 5950x is on the market with an average of 15% more powerfull.
    Motherboard: MSI X570 Unify
    Ram : 64Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz (2x32Gb) : With possibility to upgrade to 128 with 2 more 32GB sticks.
    SSD: Corsair MP510 480GB
    PSU: Corsair RM850
    Cooling : Noctua Dh-15
Case : Be Quiet Pure Base 600

For the GPU, maybe you can keep your M4000 if you don't feel the need to replace it. But if you want to change, i would wait a few month for the end of GPU shortage. Price have just go crazy these last months.
