  • Mat editor with vray materials....

When I installed Vray 5 in Max 21, all the mat editor slots auto-poulated with Vray materials, each a different colour with grayscale at the bottom - very useful.
I just installed Max 22 and the Vray build for it, however this same behaviour is missing...it defaults as it used to do, to physical mats.
Is there a way to adjust the build so it works as before?
Of course I can do this manually, so no big deal if it's a pain to 'fix'

Have you set "Custom Defaults Switcher" to VRay?
    That should do it .

Hmm, not really I'm afraid. I have never used those switchers as I always remember there being issues whenever I have done.

In this instance, with a first install of Max 22 and Vray, when I switch to the Vray preset there are instantly multiple maxscript errors, popups, weird viewport colour changes and an instant loss of the main menu, resulting in an inoperable Max.

So not a fan of that.

      Suggestions welcome

In that case I would manually save a new material library replacing the default one .

Oh sure...that's easy enough. What was strange is that with 21, Vray 5 automatically did this, so it's obviously coded. Just wondered why it doesn't work the same in 22.
It'll get ironed out I'm sure.

The behavior is present when V-Ray is set from the Custom Defaults Switcher. Maybe your 3ds Max 2021 has it set.

Hmm, well I never use the switcher, so not sure how that can happen - I will look into it
