  • No GI shadows on my Matte plane

    Hi,

I'm rendering a scene using only a HDRI environment bitmap, no scene lights. The scene consists of some objects placed on a plane with a V-Ray material and the matte option on in the object settings, alpha set to -1.0, affect shadows on, etc., just like it should be. The setup worked fine with V-Ray 1.09, but I don't get any shadows on my matte plane anymore using the latest V-Ray beta version. How come?

At first I thought maybe the Light Cache washed out the shadows, but in the preview all shadows look fine. I read in the manual though that the preview doesn't show the matte yet.

    Thanks and cheers,

    Metin

    Metin,
I am just rendering the same thing, make sure you have shadows checked in the direct light option in the vray properties

      Hi Chris,

Do you mean in the direct light section of the matte properties? I've got shadows checked there, but with no result. As I said: the exact same setup worked just as it should in V-Ray 1.09.

      Cheers,

Thanks man. It's pretty late out here and I'm wrestling with this for a few hours already now.

By the way, primary GI is Irradiance and secondary GI is Light cache, might be useful for your test. Default lights are off, only HDRI lighting from environment override.

Hi, I don't understand your problem!
You can't have shadows on a matte plane with hdri lighting?
                  like this?

Do you have a vray dome light by any chance?

edit: Oh I see you don't

                      Hi guys,

                      The facts in a row:

1: Create a scene with a few objects on a standard Max plane.
2: VRayMaterials on everything, near white VRayMaterial on the plane.
3: Set plane to matte in object properties, switching on shadows and affect alpha, setting alpha to -1.0.
4: Put dynamic HDRI bitmap in environment override (both lighting and reflection). I used one of the HDRI-Studio lighting setup bitmaps.
                      5: Set background to white.
6: Render with latest beta, settings: GI 1 = irradiance, GI 2 = light cache, fairly high quality settings for both.
7: Shadows are apparent in prepass, but disappear in final render.

                      Cheers,

                      Metin

                          Hey guys,

I think I've trapped the problem: try the same scene approach, but switch to Delone Triangulation! Other methods turn out to work fine indeed, but Delone seems to eat matte shadows.

                          Cheers,
