  • sorry - not vray specific, archive a max file with all the bitmaps

not vray specific, but 3ds max related. i'm trying to find out what you do when you archive a 3ds max scene to re-map the bitmaps to the archive directory?

so when i archive a file which references all bitmaps on a remote network file folder, archive collects all the bitmaps and folders and puts them into the zip file.

when i un-zip and open the max scene file, all those bitmaps still have reference to the remote network file folder paths?!

i thought it was supposed to change the paths to the bitmaps to look inside the un-zipped archive folder. ugh.

is there a best practice for this?

i'm running into an issue where our network connection is slow because it's a remote location and figured i could speed everything up by archiving a scene and working on my local computer, then re-archive it and move it back to the network or just copying the max files back? idk. i'm trying to figure out best practice for when you're on a remote network.

    thanks,

    any tips would be appreciated.

I don't have the answer for the archive feature but you can easily remap everything using Relink Bitmaps v2.15 or KStudio's Project Manager. Both really useful tools. Hope this is helpful in some way.

ok thanks, i just started reading about scripts i'm going to try a couple out. i'm hoping to push for a local box on our network that can be replicated every night with a box on the remote network. that will help! fingers crossed!

For the longest time I get an error using strip missing paths or delete missing bitmaps (one or the other can't remember) so this feature never worked for me. Has he ever said if he plans to update this tool? If not I will just stick with project manager.

You can use Library track relink by pixamoon or even connecter. I personally almost don't use relink bitmaps anymore. LTR does a better job without having to open every file.
