  • Bake Vray Displacement Mod to Mesh

From what I found here, this has been addressed in regards to Proxys and using it on water in Modo, but I can't find a straight answer. I think the answer is "can't be done" but I wanted to double check one more time.

I have a displacement map of bark on a cylinder that is cut like a log. I have displaced it nicely with VRayDisplacementMod. Now I need to 3d print it. Can I bake the displacement into the mesh?

I tried using Max's 'Displacement Mesh (WSM)' but the closed up edges are terrible and need a lot of work to fix. VRay's modifier with 'Keep Contiunity' checked keeps really nice edges. I just can't bake it. So, I'm stuck.

Any way to bake the nicer displacement of VRay's modifier?

Luckily you posted this just after they fixed (in the latest hotfix) the script that was broken.
So, apparently this now works https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/a...s-Max-geometry

fixeighted Thanks for this. I don't know why I didn't find that thread in all of the searching I did but I'm glad you pointed it out. That seems to work. I need to refine my skills with it to get the level of detail I need, but on first try, I created texture on an Editible Poly and that's fantastic. Thank you...!

For what you're doing you could also look at Zbrush, where it'd be relatively trivial and far easier to add whatever detail you needed. Plus it is
ideal for outputting to 3D print and is used extensively for such things.
Glad this part worked for you anyway

Yea, I've tried ZBrush for years. I just can't wrap my head around the interface and logic. If you use ZBrush everyday I can see how valuable it is. But if you touch it 5 times a year, each time you have to spend 5 hours starting over and looking at Youtube. I have 3D-Coat and it's a lot easier to drive than ZBrush. But for this use, neither of them was sufficient. I need to use a displacement map I alread had from a client and needed to get it into a mesh. I was able to get what I wanted without the VRay script but it look longer than I wanted to clean up the open edges. With the Vraydisplacementmod as you know, I can close those edges up with a tick.

Anyway, this will work for my current need and I appreciate it.

            Agreed, it can be awkward.
Anyway, you have a solution, so all good
