Split save is great if you want to post denoise, or try various settings. If you are happy with the result in the VFB, as the OP seemed to be then it still wastes disk space until you delete the channels you don't want.

I get it, lele. It's better, more powerful, allows adjusting later, etc.

But if users just want the RGBA saved then why not let them? It's pretty clear you are getting more support requests to save JUST the RGBA than you are from people asking how they can change their denoise settings after the fact. So just let users save ONLY the RGBA, and nothing else. Seems pretty simple, and obviously clear. Why are we even discussing this?

I love your input, and I love your desire to tweak and enhance. I see myself in those goals. (Heck, I am the guy who says over and over NEVER *REMOVE* FEATURES.) But sometimes users just want simple and unencumbered.

No, the OP specifically mentioned raw file save (
        output raw exr file
        ): that is an impossibility.
I'd have zero issues if we added an option to the VFB, even just in the general options, out of the main UI, to not save denoiser-bound layers.
But that's easy work done on a memory framebuffer, that the raw file save is not.

Semantics... really? The OP says, "I need only EffectsResults.RGB."

We all know what they want and why (denoised RGBA *ONLY* ... to save disk space).

It's really quite simple. Why is it being made so complex? It's an oversight that should be corrected.

I love you, lele, for all your insight, and for your trouble stirring. It's good, and I think it benefits us all in the end.. But in this case it's very simple-- give the man (person whatever) what he (she, it, they) wants.

            Not semantics, important differences.

Which is kinda the point of calling you on semantics. Do you, and have you the whole time, NOT known what they want and why?

              I don't believe it; you're a sharp person.

This whole discussion is very similar to that about domelight scale and height adjustments:
                  https://forums.chaos.com/forum/v-ray...orona-vs-v-ray

Just like now Lele believed that everything with domelight was exactly as it HAD to be and nothing could be changed.
And... Chaos introduced finite dome in V-Ray 6.

So maybe in V-Ray 9 or 10... something will change about saving raw exrs

Is that the case? I get a series of individual EXR files, one per render element. And they are unclamped. Are yours clamped ?

You'd be surprised to know i was the one doing all the internal testing and suggestion, and that the results of those still extend a bit further than the simple finite projection, just like i mentioned multiple times in the very thread you link.
Sadly, the simple finite option is all we had time and resources for (and, it should be noted, the toggle is *not* in the same place as it is for Corona.).
Debate is not a personal affront.

Mh, an elegant way out of this would be to have a mode on the denoiser RE and layer itself (mirrored, initially), so that it denoised and marked those data layers as "no save".
The savers then would have to be able to skip the unwanted ones.
By "Savers" i still do not mean the Raw one, but perhaps the Max one and the VFB ones could be rationalised for lean saving.
I have however no idea of how much work this would entail, if it was at all an option.

It remains dangerous as the option would be tucked away in the RE and could be forgotten.
Re-rendering a sequence because it can't be denoised temporally would still hurt a lot more than manual deletion of the unwanted stuff.

                          All valid points.

You could put a warning in the logs which might help reduce the impact of the first issue (saving of some data being controlled in a render element settings page).

Yeah, or a dialog before render starts.
Alas, this had been looked into before (not by me.), and the solution gravitated towards split-save, likely because of lack of viable alternatives.
We'll know for sure after the break.

*Raw* file save is a different thing altogether.

                              Hi,

just as a sidenote: When using the Split RenderElements contrary to the Raw Image the Cryptomatte becomes non functionary in Nuke. I would like to use only the split renderelements because it doesn't include all of the "waste" denoise layers but can't as Cryptomatte is not working. Since having to transfer always the rendered images of large sequences from the Online Renderfarm to local storage the file size is quite critical in overall transfer speed and workflow. So an option to disable the "waste" layers in the Raw would be highly appreciated. It could be done through a checkbox in the Denoiser Renderelement Element and would be pretty much clear. My guess (which could be wrong) is that 99% of users anyway don't do any denoising through Nuke with the V-Ray Render elements.

                              Thx for considering
