To restrict null session connections (or disable null session access): 1. Start Registry Editor.
      2. Locate, and then click the following key in the registry:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\LSA
      3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
      Value Name: RestrictAnonymous
      Data Type: REG_DWORD
      Value: 2
      Default: 0

A value of 2 restricts null session connections.

i havent tried this ... but it may work ... just back-up your reg ~!

Just run the patch available from that site.. no need to mess around with regedit.

Simply a regedit isn't sufficient anymore anyways. With XP service pack 2, MS made some deeper changes to enforce the connection limit that the simple registry hack doesn't get around. I think the utility on that link overcomes this.

I haven't been able to check to see if this opens up the 10 connection limit with DR, fully utilizing both our VRay licenses because DR isn't working at all for me anymore.

When I start the vray spawner on my rendernodes, it just quickly starts and quits max repeatedly. I have tried all the steps involving replacing the xml files, reinstalling vray, clearing the network folder, etc, etc.

I posted this problem before and never got any suggestions for resolution, so I have been without DR, waiting for one of the mythical "newer builds with improved DR" to arrive.

Did you install straight to Max 8? I discovered a similar problem - you had to install Max 7 first for some strange reason, then 8, then you could go back and uninstall 7...

well- my method got it working after spending three days troubleshooting... Max 7 had to be on their at some point - I think Vray was referencing a previous version of Backburner.

I'm still really confused by all of this which is more of an IT issue than anything else...heres how I understand things:

The manager must run windows XP SP1 or older to be able to use the reg patch to enable more than 10 simultaneous network connections. Windows XP with SP2 does not work with the reg edit. Also, is this legal because it means microsoft do not make money out of you buying their server product.

                          or...

You must get windows 2003 server for the manager with enough CAL licences to covour all of your rendering machines (not really cheap for us anyway)

The above is relevant to overcoming the 10 connection limit with regards to normal network rendering. If your manager has a 10 connection limit and you have more than 10 render machines, many machines on the network will 'drop out' and loose the connection to the manager and each of these machines will restart their rendering jobs when a connection becomes available (someone please confirm this).

                          _____________________________

                          seperate issue (DR):

Regardless of if you run server 2003 with 1000 CAL licences and have 1000 machines on the network, vray has a limit of 10 machines per licence to be used for DR.

How does this work? If you have several machines each with their own VRAY licence server, does the machine you use for DR recognise these other servers on the network and allow more than 10 DR machines?

                          Natty Wrote:
"Its not vray thats the limit .. its windows."

can anyone else confirm this because it basically means many of us have been misinformed for a long time.

                          Thanks!, Paul

                              ok cool, trying it now.

Has anyone tested DR with it though? Still 10 machine limit?

ok the patch said it worked (only ran it on the manager) but with 11 machines network rendering we had the connection limit reached several times. There was a problem saving files to the linux fileserver and problems on machines trying to load from the library.

So for us, either we somehow used more than 50 connections or else this patch didnt work.

BTW: all of the frames rendered correctly eventually but some frames were marked as having failed (7 of 50 frames failed)
