  • 2d transparency effect!

So i always assumed, after many threads on the subject over the years, that the only way to do this kind of thing was to composite 2 renders.

i was surprised to see this thread in the c4d forum showing a (rather convoluted) method that works in a single render pass:

    https://forums.chaos.com/forum/v-ray...a-4d-and-v-ray

however it has been suggested this wont work in 3dsmax since it lacks an "id generator" input on the multi sub tex..

Anyone at Chaos care to suggest a method that works in a similar way in Max?

if not, can i humbly suggest we should have that feature too? apparently maya and c4d have it.

doesnt it have issues if you use reflections? the method in that link is quite elegant in that it applies a different opacity based on the opacity trace depth.. im sure such a thing must be possible with some of the utility maps in max but im at a loss as to how.

Ah yes, it was a bit annoying that no dev responded to that last bit, which I had forgotten about.

Maybe they'll pick up on this and have some other solution.

MultiSubTex's ID generator mode is not yet implemented in V-Ray 6.1 3dsMax and

3ds Max's SamplerInfoTex does not find V-Ray extra attributes added to Maya's Sampler Info Node.
          https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAYA...+V-Ray+Outputs

Unable to get "Transparency Level" in 3ds Max's SamplerInfoTex.

V-Ray 3ds Max developers should add these ASAP.

I wish I could use it with VRayPluginNodeTex even if the UI is not implemented.

Are the 3dsMax devs from Chaos looking at this thread?
Since it is a function that has already been implemented in V-Ray Core, I expect that adding the ID generator mode of MultiSubTex and adding attributes to SamplerInfoTex will be relatively easy.

Need to thread the Wishlist forum?

I'll mention this to the project manager and write whenever I have more info.

FYI, I've logged an improvement request (internal bug-tracker id: VMAX-13386).

Revisiting the improvement request. What do you mean by this? The options in Maya's SamplerInfo additional V-Ray attributes (Random by ID, Random By Polyshell, Random by name) are already implemented in 3ds Max's VRayMultiSubTex (respectively - By Object/Instance/Render/etc. ID, By Element and By Name). Also, there's a Maya VRayMultiSubTex, which has these features.

Did you read the C4D thread linked at #1?
Can you make this node setup in V-Ray 3dMax?

flat fixeighted super gnu We figured out another method of achieving the 2d transparency effect by simply using a 2SidedMtl the back side of which is the "empty" (white refr, ior 1) material. Please, check this scene and see if the workaround is satisfactory.

On a side note, are there any other workflows that will benefit from implementing the "ID Generator Textures" VRayMultiSubTex and/or the Transparency levels in the VRaySamplerInfoTex?

                              It sort of works

Try it with a teapot and there are parts that do not become totally transparent.
Also, this has no effect on shadows when fully transparent.
It's early though, so I might be missing something obvious...

EDIT: Teapot anomaly fixed with shell of course, which makes sense given conditions.
