I have an upgraded laptop and a new desktop. I am pretty sure with my premium license I get a render node, correct? Is it an extra render node, or is the render node needed to render anything? V-Ray once came with 5 render nodes, so I am assuming it is an actual extra render node and I can network my laptop in. I don’t have a network, so I am assuming I can just patch a CAT6 between my desktop and laptop, correct? It has been a decade since I did any network rendering.

Okay, so by the looks of it, the node that comes with the V-Ray license is needed to render on one machine. So, V-Ray went from 5 nodes to 0?

You need the rendernode from your subscription to render (with VRay) or change (VRay) materials when working in 3dsmax. So if you want to render on your laptop you can't do these things inside 3dsMax on your working PC. You can check your licensing in your account to see what is going on.

Basically, you can't render without a node, so without a node, V-Ray is bricked. You have to buy a node for each machine you want to render on?

Here is my license situation. I am not sure what the NEXT render nodes can do for me? It also shows a V-Ray 5 render node, so is that an extra one? This should probably be in the license section of the forum.

You should look in your owned products section, where the V5 en VNext nodes are coming from and if they are perpetual (licensed to infinity). Did you upgrade some of the 10 perpetual VRay3 nodes in the past?

I have some perpetual seats from a Choas "Partner", so I guess I have to contact them. I also have a V-Ray 5 for 3ds Max - Perpetual, again from a Choas "Partner". I don't think I upgraded to the latest V-Ray, I purchased a new license. I emailed support, but I fear that I'll be waiting a month for a reply.

I still have 10 perpetual VRay3 nodes which I could upgrade to Vray6 nodes. But I don't think I will ever need nodes again because there are better and faster tools to handle renders on single workstations. But if I did, I certainly would go the subscription route! So nothing lost.

Yes, when Chaos stripped the extra nodes from V-Ray, I purhcased a computer with 36 cores to avoid having to buy the extra nodes.

Curious how you are rendering? is it not inside 3ds max ui? if it's outside of 3ds max ui, likely you need that node.

No, it is inside MAX - I am sure I need another node. It is strange pricing... $190 for a year, or $75 monthly.

This shouldn't be the case, unless I misunderstand something. You have the gui license? it should let you render in the ui interface. What cpu did you end up buying?

Okay, I render on my main PC now and I want to use my laptop as a slave. I can purchase an annual node license for $190, but if I wanted to do it monthly, it is $75 per month.

Looks like you have a vray next render node, you can upgrade it to vray 6 render node, if you follow this link. Should be about $300 (I'm not sure if its annual though)

Yeah, something is strange. I can buy an annaul for $190, without an upgrade. Also, I purchased it from a 3rd party and they are not getting back to me.
