Some time ago, we produced an animation of a courtyard whereby the grass in the courtyard was displaced using the methods (and probably the maps) discussed on this very forum. The still images looked wonderful - some of the most impressive grass I've seen (like the grassy sheep).
So I left an animation using a pre-calced Irmap going for about 24 hours. There was probably about 10 seconds of DVD quality animation rendered.
When I put the stills together, the grass shimmered like crazy - like a very bad green interference pattern. Time was running out on that job, so I had to use a boring old bitmap of grass to fake it. Oh well.
Now I assume the problem was my AA settings. IIRC I would have used a fixed rate of 3.
I am working on yet another big animation and yet again, the time is running out fast. There are lots of hedges in this scene, and I have achieved the best results using chamfered boxes with a displacement modifier on there - image attached at bottom.
What I want to know is, am I going to run into the same 'shimmering' problems with all the displaced hedges? Is there anything I can do to combat this potential problem that wil not increase render times too much? Obviously I could up the AA settings dramatically, but this would in turn, dramatically affect the render times.
Any tips?
