  • Displacement in animation

Some time ago, we produced an animation of a courtyard whereby the grass in the courtyard was displaced using the methods (and probably the maps) discussed on this very forum. The still images looked wonderful - some of the most impressive grass I've seen (like the grassy sheep).

So I left an animation using a pre-calced Irmap going for about 24 hours. There was probably about 10 seconds of DVD quality animation rendered.

When I put the stills together, the grass shimmered like crazy - like a very bad green interference pattern. Time was running out on that job, so I had to use a boring old bitmap of grass to fake it. Oh well.

Now I assume the problem was my AA settings. IIRC I would have used a fixed rate of 3.

I am working on yet another big animation and yet again, the time is running out fast. There are lots of hedges in this scene, and I have achieved the best results using chamfered boxes with a displacement modifier on there - image attached at bottom.

What I want to know is, am I going to run into the same 'shimmering' problems with all the displaced hedges? Is there anything I can do to combat this potential problem that wil not increase render times too much? Obviously I could up the AA settings dramatically, but this would in turn, dramatically affect the render times.

    Any tips?

    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

    Hi !

We´ve faced the same problem with displaced grass and found no solution but increasing AA settings wildly Some people used to double the resolution to get rid of noise, shimmer and other nasty artifacts, but i haven´t tried that, because we tend to be short of RAM in our scenes...

The maps are nothing special - just a photo of the side of a beech hedge.

Anyone else with a suggestion on escaping from the shimmering effect?

Are you sure it is AA?

When using 3d displacement, with 'view dependant' checked, you could get this too, as the displacement is different each frame.

Did you try adaptive QMC AA, 1/4 with qmc sampler noise th=0.002?

tricky can you post up a piece of the animation of the flicker so we can have a look?

You could try increasing the QMC Global mutliplier and decreasing the Noise threshold.

Obviously this will mean longer rendertimes.
