  • "error: cannot allocate memory for HDR map" ???

    Hi,

As usual, I`m in the middle of a battle and came across problems.
I was modeling and texturing a complex building on one machine (XP system, max 5.1, 1,5GB RAM), everything rendered and worked fine. There were interpolated glossies reflecting a huge HDR sky map.

But when I took the files to another computer (W2k, max5.1, 2GB RAM, faster PC) - it tells me "error: cannot allocate memory for HDR map" when I try to render. I also can`t see this HDR map in the material editor.

Other (smaller) maps work fine on both PCs.

I`ve tried bitmap pager with various settings, no luck.

I know it`s a huge map, but It was working on a slower PC with less memory, so why it doesn`t show on faster PC with more memory? What is going on?

    Please help, thanks,

Hard to tell, I can`t get the info - it just doesn`t load.

Probably it`s about 8`000 or even 15`000 pix wide.

In megs - it`s a 15MB HDR file, so it`s not the biggest one.

Mmmm. Try checking Dynamic memory perhaps? Or try disabling the Virtual Frame Buffer - both Max's own and Vray's.

Can anyone else help? Never seen this b4.

          Well, dynamic does not work.
This thing happens first in material editor - it just doesn`t load the HDR map, so changing render setting won`t work...

I`ve just downloaded HDR shop and resized the HDR map.
Oryginally it was 9000x4500, when I resized it to 7000x3500 it started working - MAX xan load it. So the day is saved, but them problem is still unsloved - I don`t know why there`re limits to size of HDR maps on one machine, whilst everything works swell on other.

So, topic is still under a question mark.

Try adjusting your Bitmap Pager size in max properties.

Yeah, I`ve tried that. Gone up to 250MB with it still with no luck.
However, I`m not sure if I set it up correctly, I`ve fiddled with the bitmap pager defaults.
What bitmap pager`s settings do you recommend (there are three spinners)? Can you guide me with that?

Cause right now I came to conclusion that this problem is system based. XP lets you handle bigger bitmaps than W2k. Does this theory make any sense?

mmm.. you could try render with Backburner. close Max and disable frame buffer. ¿?
sorry me, I write bad english because i am spanish.

The bitmap pager has no effect on the VRayHDR texture; whether or not the operating system will allocate the requested memory is very system-dependent... reducing the size of the map will probably help.

Yeah, that`s what I finally did in HDR shop.
Does anyone else have experience with handling large HDRs in W2k?

I have noticed one more thing:
on my XP system - not only that it can open HDR map in full (9000px) size in MAX, but also I can copy the HDR material in the material editor to a different slot and it works!
on my W2k system - I had to reduce the size of the HDR to 7000px, it works, but when I want to copy it to another slot it`s black. system won`t load it anymore to any other slot.

Is there a way of setting Windows differently, so I could avoid this problems on W2k, or is it just a "default" problem in W2k?

I guess the same will be with the limits to bitmap and render sizes - no problems on XP, but many problems and limits on W2k?
