  • Noise Cleanup and Shading Rates

I've been out of the rendering game for a while doing realtime graphics for about 6-7 years now. I've recently upgraded from an old version of Vray to 6.2, and I'm working a project currently. My test renders are noisier than the old version of vray and I'm beginning the process of cleaning that up. There are only 3 lights in the scene, but the key light is an HDRI, required by the client. I've spent some time reading various threads and the tech moves pretty quickly, so I am unsure what is the right process these days with this new (to me) version of vray.

My render farm is small so I have some optimizing to do. I have a couple questions, any help is greatly appreciated.

    1) Is this cheatsheet still relevant? Is the process affected by the min shading rate? What I've been doing so far is rendering with SampleInfo and reducing my max AA's until I start to see red to speed up render times. At 100 it's taking (imho) too long to do what amounts to a somewhat simple scene. The hair of course seems to be the thing slowing it down. When I hide the hair I think 100 max AA images renders pretty quick, all things considered.

    2) I'm using the VrayHairNextMtl, and I notice that Diffuse, Lighting, and GI elements render black. Is it correct then to assume hair is only rendered with diffuse + Spec + Reflections? Would the min shading rate be the best way to increase the samples on those Hair elements? Or, should I use the subdivs on the object properties? (Or is that the same thing these days?)

    3) My GI and Reflection passes are very noisy, and I want to adjust the shading rate upwards to address it. Is that the right move?

    4) I've played a bit with the lightmix element and it rules. I did notice that for my HDRI key light that after applying the effects, it reduced the multiplier on the light. On a hunch I put it back to 1 and reduced my render multiplier on the bitmap itself and it seemed to render faster that way. Is there something about the render multiplier on HDRIs which causes slowdowns? Or, to rephrase, is it the same to increase the render multiplier on the bitmap node vs leaving it at 1 and adjusting camera exposure levels? (Am I making sense?)

    5) I am using an AlSurface shader for the skin of the characters. Are there any things I should be concerned with in relation to hair rendering + AlSurface regarding sampling?

Ultimately I suppose I'm trying to find the right 'order of operations' to address my render time issues which seems to be caused mostly by Hair, AlSurface, and using an HDRI light. I think ( and please correct me) that the order should be SamplerInfo-> Max AA subdivs adjustments until no red-> Min Shading Rate to clean up those secondary samples. Or am I just bring old problems and methods into new tech? Thanks so much for any help.

Well I think I figured most of this out. My bad render times were due to a light with "Affect diffuse" above the intensity of the light. A holdover from when I was using texture in the light. That was causing all my noise and problems. Otherwise, things seem pretty much automatic these days which is pretty great.

The help cleared up the diffuse question on hair. I suppose this thread is solved.

    Best Regards,
    AJ

Wow thanks! Vray 6 is off the hook awesome. So many improvements since Next which was my last permanent license. I can't get over how awesome lightmix is and the speed of the cloud rendering. Chaos knocked this out of the park.
