I thank vray for letting us use the points release but lets not forget two things:
    1. vray 1.5 release date is way past.
    2. this has been a two way road ,vray gave us the point release and we gave them fidback about bugs, we took those releases and put them into production, so i think that was a win win situation for all sides.

I've never had a problem with a dongle. These days with USB memory you can save your work onto the dongle and take it home with you.

I hate the current system soooo much. If I change my hardware setup I'm out of action for a day or so. I cannot use Vray at home because I'd have to leave the work machine on and then try and connect to it over the net. I have tried it many ,many times and it simply does not work. It sucks, roll on the dongles!

I agree with gilicom and would like to add that VRay started different to adobe, max or most other historic programs, they set a different precedent, we liked and supported it. It also resulted in this very democratic forum which I really like and appreciates.

With that in mind it properly would have been a good idea to test the idea of implementing a dongle especially as it is accepted by all that a dongle system will not stop piracy. That and seeing what clearly is a controversial issue seems to be the reason for a long delay in a next point or 1.5 release.

If having the ability to port a license from one machine to another is the main advantage, I think that in a year or two it would be realised by all that it would have been a lot more economical route to have just bought another copy of VRay instead of implementing a dongle system.

Like some others highlighted Chaos at present does not nearly have the international distribution network which will be required by a dongle system, not even a main player like Autodesk were able to supply the coverage required by such a move.

So if there were or hopefully going to be a poll, all I would like to know is, can I vote more than once. My cross goes for no dongle please.

the main reason for the dongle is so you can have 1 license that will work cross platform. Max maya sketchup etc
And then if you want to take your license home to do some work you can do so easily.

            Tom B:
Actually accessing the vray licence server across the net works... it works just fine. I have done it and I have help a handfull of other people do it.

If it doesnt work for you you must be doing something wrong.

Why is distributing dongles so difficult? Resellers will have them. Also, there should be the ability to order one online and have it shipped to you.

To add, Vlado said there will be a grace period so if a dongle fails there will be time to replace it.

1 Resellers, make a list of all the countries, cities and towns that VRay users are located and then a list of the locations of all the current VRay resellers. Remembering that in some countries not having a reseller in a specific city can be just as bad as not having a reseller in that country at all. I think once this picture has been sketched it would be clear what a mammoth effort this step will require and that it’s most likely that some users in "far off" places will be affected negatively by it.

2 The grace period is good, but the bottom line is still, if the dongle failed you will need a new one.

Its hardware, so there is a price tag to it.

It needs to be shipped, which means more costs.

Once arriving at the country of destination it will go into customs, anybody who has done any import/export will appreciate what a potential show stopper this could be. Depending on the duration of the grace period it might even been that the dongle lies at customs longer than the grace of this period. In some countries there is also going to be further costs once released by customs, import duties and taxes. Once again depending on the location, where I live the way those are calculated add up to a substantial percentage of the product cost.

I might be wrong, but my logic tells me that this can only mean a major price increase in a copy of VRay if Chaos is going to try and cover most of the above costs. Or the ownership cost Of VRay is going to be a new entity users will have to deal with and like all other ownership costs it will be a recurring cost.

I am anxiously awaiting Vlado’s FAQ, but think that there are a very good reasons why the internet business model makes such good sense and why its used.

I hate to say it/speculate, but the upgrade will probably cost 'someone' (and I'm thinking the 'community') money whether it is:

                    1) Shipping
                    2) Ordering
                    3) Shipping and ordering.
                    4) purchasing an upgrade which includes these items...

unless Chaos is going to foot the bill...

Well Vlado said that existing users would not have to pay for 1.5 .......but who knows with this whole dongle debarkle (spelling)

Only one person can confirm this... Vlado.. over to you

Since most questions have already been asked, waiting for Vlado's FAQ here too

simply agree with the conviction that hardware locks can add logistic and physical inconveniences, I'd guess the system impelmented by autodesk with cdilla ~ safecast for stand alones, and FlexLM for networks is not fitting for VRay, because my experience with it is quite satisfactory. I've experineced couple of Hardware locks death, Onyx and VIZ R3 (both parallel)

OK Daforce I know it works, just not for me, and I've followed every thread I could find on the subject.

i did not see "please include a dongle" anywhere in the wishlist section here.

i'd prefer quick updates and no snailmail/reseller delay.

i do remember tonnes of people begging for a physical copy (mainly for the manual and also due to the "i feel ive bought something if i can see the box" syndrom) how do you think it will get to you? beam it up scotty?

You only have to go through this once. You won't have to get a new dongle for each update, of course.
