the surfaces look dirty. is there a way to clean them up without making huge rendering times.

the issue is especially notciable on the white walls above the couch to the right below the window.

    irradience map settings are:

    -3
    -1
    30
    30
    .4
    .3
    .1

No, you will get more accurate shadows if you dont store them.

Can you take a screen shot of the rest of your settings.. i.e. first bounce and 2nd bounce..etc..etc..

does it matter how many subdivisions I make the materials like the walls?

nah subidivions on walls make no difference.

Hmmm settings seem ok.. but having such high color mapping values may well be the problem, I believe I have read something about that before.

Also for your LC, trying upping it a little to 1200-1500, turn off store direct light, change filter to fixed, and try render again.

the colo rmapping is high becuase otherwise the image comes out too dark.

what else should I do to increase the amount of light into the scene?

If the following is right about your lighting setup, you may try this:

                  GUESS:
                  (1) You are using the VRaySun + VRaySky to light the scene.
                  (2) The VRaySky map is attached in the Environment slot.

If those are true, try this:
                  (3) Set a dome light in the scene
                  (4) add the VRaySky map in there.
                  (5) increase the subdivs of the DOME-light - like 16-20

                  Best regards,
                  nikki Candelero

I'm using a HDR which is muliplied. I alos have a vray sphere light out there, and I have some planes on the environment that are refecting it.

FYI the multiplyer that is in the skylight slot doesnt affect the HDR it only affects the color swatch when your nothing using a map such as a HDR, to increase the light coming from the HDR you need to increase the HDR multiplyer.

I think your excessive rendertimes are because you have Refractive GI Caustics and that also causes the "dirty" effect, GI Refractive caustics from the windows and the couch. Cya.

I turned the refractive gi off and took the color mapping settings down, made the IR and LC settings on high with a 80 HSph and it's still looking dirty

i d try to go back to 0....hide all the unecessary geometry, overide with a greyish vray material, default settings....work from there on....
or if u can strip ur scene and upload one might trce something in ur settings....

                              any vray log errors?

Also try remind the HDRI from the skylight slow and just use a simple color like white or light blue.. but turn down the multipler 60 is too high.
