How is Vray at handling big texture maps? I have a tower to render but not sure whether to model the details or map them. But the map would need to be around 5000px by 2000px (and probably at least 2 of them in a blend material).

there is a plugin called wavgen or something like that which is for large maps. someone on this forum used to use it for huuuuuge maps.

So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

yes, but 5000x2000 px is not excessively large. I routinely have 3 or 4 maps that are about 8000 px square (landscape maps, or texture baked procedurals for things like asphalt), and vray handles them just fine (Max 8, Vray 1.5 RC2). My 32-bit render nodes will max out on memory, but my 64 bit nodes with 4 gig ram handle it just fine.

          Yuk.
Went on the wavegen site, and downloaded a movie...
25K pixels square maps loaded in realtime, yuk.
          2GB of image file, lol.
It'll take me a while to take in...
