How is Vray at handling big texture maps? I have a tower to render but not sure whether to model the details or map them. But the map would need to be around 5000px by 2000px (and probably at least 2 of them in a blend material).

yes, but 5000x2000 px is not excessively large. I routinely have 3 or 4 maps that are about 8000 px square (landscape maps, or texture baked procedurals for things like asphalt), and vray handles them just fine (Max 8, Vray 1.5 RC2). My 32-bit render nodes will max out on memory, but my 64 bit nodes with 4 gig ram handle it just fine."Why can't I build a dirigible with my mind?"
