  • window glass problem

I have just started with Vray, going through tutorials and applying to my own test scene.

Looking from inside through a sliding glass door, partialy open. I want the glass to slightly reflect the interior. I get the slight reflection and can see a railing on the deck about 9.5' away. Beyond that the background object is not visable through glass. It's solid gray. I cannot figure out why the glass material blocks the view of the distant background. It's a Vray material. No doubt some lack of undestanding on my part. Can anyone point me in a direction to fix this?

Since your railing looks like it's OK through the glass I don't think it's your material settings (although this could use some improvement --> I recommend you set diffuse to nearly black, reflection to nearly white with fresenl and IOR of 2, and refract to 230 grey and check affect shadows and alpha).

How are you getting the background into the scene? Is it a background image or a material on a plane? What are your Max Environment settings and what are your vray environment settings (looks to me like you have Reflection/refraction override checked and is set to med. grey).

Thank you both for your quick replies

        Dimitry,

I will try to get the image to a plae that doesn't require registration

        David,

I made the changes you suggested to my matrial. It renders essentialy the same as what I had. I trust, since I'm new to Vray, that the settings you outline are more correct.

I think, like you that the problem is somehow environment related. I have none of the boxes selected in Vray environment. I had Max environment background color on all white. Changed it to all black and the glass renders black (vs previous grey).

My background is an image mapped to a plane. I tried moving the plane between the rail and the glass. This results in the same thing. I can see the rail but beyond is black. Weird. I can't figure out what I've done wrong.

        Thanks for your help.

Did you check "visible to reflections" in the Object Props and Vray Props for the background plane?

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

I had the "visable to reflections/refractions" unchecked in the object properties of the background plane.

            I checked it and voila.

            thanks again for your help.
