  • Beginner asks how to improve quality

    Hello,

This is my first Vray Architectural rendering. It’s just the basic structures with no materials (except for the pool material which is not done). I have hidden the glass, fixtures and furnishings which I will add after I get this part rendering well.

I don’t know much about Vray, but I do know there are many different ways to improve the render quality. I’m looking for some advice on how to improve the quality for this scene. Eventually I would like to be able to render a group of stills from the inside and outside and then do an animation (where only the camera moves).

These are my current settings(they are the same for each view):
VRay Sun default settings + intensity = 0.1
Under “Environment” Vray Skylight override is checked / 1.0
    Render settings are all default
Primary = Irradiance Map / Hi
    Secondary = QMC
    Exponential color mapping

Each rendering took about 7 minutes.

I would like to stay with the Irradiance Map/ QMC combo because I think that will be best for doing an animation in the future, but I don’t know what to change next. What would be the next step to improve quality get rid of blotchiness and achieve more consistent small shadows? Also the inside shot does not seem bright enough.

Thank you very much for the help

raise Hsph samples to remove splotches.

Thank you for the help! I raised the HSph to 90 and it’s getting rid of the blotchiness, but it’s getting kind of blurry:

Is there something else I can change to continue to get rid of the Blotchiness but also get rid of the blurriness at the same time? I am doing my own tests, but I want to make sure that I’m adjusting the right things.

Do you think changing the light source for the indoor views from a VR sun to a Direct light would help on render time? I read some ware that the VR sun is slower then a Direct light.

      Thanks again for the help

What type of animation are you thinking of doing? If its just a camera animation and no moving objects or lights then your best bet would be IR/LC.
If you will have moving objects then I would suggest QMC/LC

Switch to IR/LC and run these renders again and see how they look.

            Da force,
Thanks for the help. – I have been doing IR/QMC renders all day with no good results yet. Here is the fist with IR and LC:

I used a Med IR map and whatever the default LC settings are. I really like that it made the room much lighter. No blotchiness either and it rendered fast, but a lot of the definition/shadows are gone. Can you tell me what parameter to tweak next to get some shadows back? I will read about LC and keep messing with it. The animation would be camera only, but I’m not even thinking about that right now – I just want to get the basic rendering looking good first.

Brian451 Thanks for those links! I grabbed 4 of those PDF’s – I will be reading them as I render

            Thanks again for the help

QMC, will generally be more accurate but noiser and slower. You can get fairly close with IR/LC just need to tweak a few settings.

For the LC try 1000 subdivs, untick store direct light, change filter type to fixed.
You can also try to enable prefilter and set to about 50 see if that does much.
