  • VRay Proxy Question

    Hi guys,

I am working on a project for a car dealership in town here and I have to show a number of quite high poly car models in the rendering and animation. I am finding that I am running into memory issues, even with the /3GB switch on my WinXP 32 bit workstation. I thought this would be a good opportunity to take advantage of the Vray proxy objects. I had a few questions, however, that I wanted to bounce off you guys in hopes that you could me better understand this feature.

First off, my car models are currently setup as a group for each vehicle. There are a number of objects for each vehicle, so I grouped each vehicle together to make the scene more easily manageably. Can I export this group directly to a Vray mesh, or must I ungroup the cars and manually attach all the bits and pieces so that each car is one mesh object?

Secondly, once I have my Vray proxy object created, when copying multiples of the mesh do I use "instance" or "copy" for the cloned object? I would like to start using 3d geometry trees for my scenes, and have always wondered which is the best way to go about this.

Thanks in advance for any information - it is much appreciated!

The way I understand it is that you need to make one single mesh for each car.. use a sub-object material for the entire car and all its different materials, paint, chrome, tires, etc.

    Export mesh to Vray proxy....

Import proxy and instance around scene for multi cars with that same sub-object material.....

Now i dont think you can use the same sub-object material for multiple car colors though... You would have to create a new material for each color car.

THis is how I would approach it, open the group, use the collaspe utilty to collapse it to a single mesh (don't boolean ...) and a multi subobject will be created automatically. To save Ram on the material you can take out the common elements and then drag them back as instances and then just use unique materials for the colored areas you want to change, this can be done after proxing, the ID's should be respected...

I think my thread started a few weeks ago, will help you a lot:

your welcome, helps in sticky situations, look out for the way it gets uses, can mess up your multisubobjects!
