  • interior light setup using skylight portal

    Hi people,

Can you take a look at this screengrab and tell me if this is correct. I have 3 vray lights at the window setup as skylight portals (the reason for doing this was I saw the new features for MR in max 2008 and saw that the guy put the skylight portal up at the window to direct all the rays into the room).

I also have a vray sun and environment pointing down into the room.

Is this the correct way to setup a scene like this ?

I seem to lose shadow definition on some objects in the scene and they almost appear to float, but im not sure how to overcome that.

Also, any suggestions on how to improve the mood of the scene would be good.

One more thing..sorry I guess when using the vray physical cam and such high multiplier settings for the sun, the only way to correctly expose the outside would be to set the camera up at a lower exposure...as you would a normal camera ..is this correct ?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Steve

i think it looks pretty darn good. Some volumetrics coming from the window would be a good touch.

I guess you are using irradiance mapping for GI? If so then you could try to use Detail Enhancement (enabled it from irrmap settings) to add details or make seperate dirtmap/ao pass.

Your setup is fine, its just your render settings that look a little low.

        What are your GI settings?

The settings are set low for the purpose of the example..I dont have problems with artifacts when doing the full render. If you think its ok, maybe im being too harsh on myself..who knows.

Am i correct in saying about the double exposure to get the exterior looking right in the image ?

Do you think changing the shadow bias might make the objects not directly lit appear more grounded ?

          Thanks for comments.

            nice trainers mate.

I usually use the same sort of setup but I never get the amount of light/glow that you do

I will upload the image to the images section soon, but talking of volumetrics, I thought that would be a good idea also, maybe with some particles or noise for dust in the air, but..

Ive tried using standard max volume light effect with vray physical camera and cant seem to get the exposure of the volume light correct...how do i do this ?

The trainers are quite detailed as are most of the other things in the scene. I will be including close up shots when I finally upload this image.

Yeah the light does look really nice actually

                Are you suing 1.5?

Did you leave the sun at its default multiplyer and just change the vraycamera to suit?
What were your camera and colormapping settings?

I think you would be better off just doing the volumetrics in a separate pass that you could just render out using scanline.
