This is mainly an observation of the performance of our workstations and I wonder if anybody else has the same thing.
When working on *reasonably complicated* scenes, we have noticed that our *reasonably powerful* machines become very unresponsive when rendering locally, yet if we render the same scene using DR, the machine can still be used for other tasks - email/surfing/even a bit of AutoCAD modelling or Photoshop work.
The spec of the machines is as follows:
Intel D975XBX2
Dual Intel Core2 Quad CPU @ 2.66GHz
4GB RAM (800MHz DDR2 Synchronus)
XP 64bit
Vray 1.50.00 (32bit)
Max 8 (32bit) with latest service packs etc
Now I don't really know why this is the case - I know that Vray and Max are obviously going to use a good portion of the systems resources (CPU and RAM) when rendering, but I am (almost) sure that with older machines/versions of software, we could certainly multi-task when rendering. With these newer machines we struggle even to check email when a local render is under way - the machine basically locks up until the render is complete - even clicking 'cancel' is difficult!. Yes, I could go into task manager and free up one of the processors for email/surfing etc, but we never needed to do that yesteryear. What makes it stranger still is that when we do the rendering as a DR (most often the case these days due to the ever-increasing complexity of our projects) multi-tasking is a breeze.
Is this a common issue?
