what post-prod animation program would you recommend in combination with vray and render elements channels ?

toxik ? fusion ? Nuke ? combustion ? AE ?

A lot of DD & ex-DD people have had an influence with Vray's development.

Of course Vray is a beautiful renderer and will work fine with any post production package...

also a lot depends on your price range unfortunately. Those programs have a huge difference in price.

If you plan on using multichannel/layer EXRs i'd recommend nuke. Depends a lot on whatr kind of post you plan to do (painting is definately not nuke's strong side, tho it's on the roadmap for an overhault).
Nuke is to my knowledge the only tool out there that properly handles multichannel EXRs. Other tools require you to have multiple read nodes for the different layers/channels. Nuke was literally build around EXR and a multichannel pipeline.

And Nuke really is amazing to work with. The seamless workflow from Vray .exr into Nuke, and masking control with the multimatte element. I wish it was a bit quicker at outputting, and could handle really large still images better, 5k squ. (but im not using 64bit version so might be better now)

Yep agree on that - really quick to work with though a few bits frustrate me - Thorsten how much difference do you find you get in the realism of something with nuke from a raw render?

Well in my eyes a lot, tho realism is only a part of the equation. The bigger advantage is artistic freedom i'd say. To tweak images to specific looks or needs/wants of a client. All in all i'd say it adds a whole lot. Any postpro does. But the streamlined and linear throughout approach really helps tons over other pipelines/workflows for us.

Well i tried fusion, toxik and Nuke.

I have the impression as well that Nuke is the most powerfull and most customisable app, but the channel workflow is a little hard to get into.

Toxik is cool, but to work with multiple channels is more difficult because you need to have multiple input files.

Most of the tools i need for arch-viz is color correction, some glow/glint effects and Z blur. So i don't know if Nuke is a little too much...

Absolutely - Our place is flame based and mainly using mental ray with xsi so it's extremely backward as regards this type of thing - flame has float support to an extent but it's done as an exposure setting on import so not as flexible as nuke or afx. I was working on some car shots before christmas that I mean to upload and get feedback on from folks in dd and your place. I'm happy with them as raw renders but I know they aren't 100% realistic so it'd be great to do some tweaks that sell them more.

Well Ok, i think i will stick with Nuke as the channels system in the exr files is something that works very well.
Have you seen some special vray-related scripts somewhere ?

does nuke come with any sort of z-blur DOF effect? Can't remember seeing one.

There is a Z Dof, but you only have the choice between gaussian blur and circular lens blur, but without any special features ( like in rosenman's DOF
