I hope this question doesn't make my sound foolish, but can you select all of the elements in a scene with the same material assigned to it? What I have done in the past is create a new material with the same name as an existing. I would then create a dumb object and asign it to that element to override the material. Would this be the correct way to handle this?

Select by Material.
The object selector selects by color, but not material. I'll dig deeper into the material editor. I looked, but didn't see anything so I'll look again.Bobby Parker

In edit poly there is the "select by material ID" option. I use it all the time it works great especially if you provide a name for the sub materials. It took me a long time to figure out what that blank spot was for in the multi-sub menu between the number and the material slot.
