  • Matte materials in combination with vray domelight

    Hi,

I am working on a scene that needs some objects added into a picture. I created the backdrop image, and a hdri map of the room to match the lighting and reflections.

The table and wall behind it are recreated with 2 simple planes. These have a vraymaterial applied to it. Each material also has a vraymtl wrapper to turn it into a matte material.

I added a vray domelight with the hdri in the texture slot.

Now when I place a glass object on the table, the material of the two planes is refracted through it, which is normal. What's not normal, is that the refracted materials look way too dark.

Here's an image showing what I mean. The materials of wall and table plane are a bit matched to the real colors of the wall and table.

As a test, I turned off the dome light and used the hdri map in the vray environment skylight slot. Now the result is what I would expect:

Here are the two images with the matte option turned off:
    Domelight:

    GI skylight:

These two all look normal to me.

Any ideas why the domelight darkens the matte materials seen through refractions so much?

    Thanks,

    wouter

When using the dome light, you may need to set the GI environment override to black - since that effect is already covered by the dome light.

Hi Vlado, this was the case, skylight was set to black and spinner to 0.0

The domelight darkens the surface seen through refractions, but only in combination with the matte material. (same happens with reflections)

      Here's the testscene: www.aversis.be/vrayrhino/matte_test.zip

It is setup with the domelight active (you will need to replace the hdri map with one of your own). Simply render, and then untick the matte option for both wall and table materials and render again. You'll see that without the matte everything looks ok.

      Kind regards,

        Hi,

I'm still having the exact same issue and have no clue why this is happening. Does anyone else notice this darkening through refraction on matte materials, lit by a domelight?

Vlado, I also tried to set the GI multipliers both to 1.0, but this made no difference, still the domelight version in much darker.

I would like to be able to use the domelight + hdri in combination with matte materials, since this is way better than a hdri in the skylight slot.

        Thanks for any help,

        wouter
