  • IBL - Vray Dome Light, Quick Question...

    Hi there,

I have a little grey area that I wouldn't mind quickly clearing up

When using a Vray Dome Light with HDRI in the texture slot do I no longer need to use 2 or 3 different HDRI maps to light the scene?

For example, previously I would use:

1x HDRI (High-Res) for Reflections, placed in the Environment Override slot.
1x HDRI (Low-Res, Blurred) for GI Lighting placed in the Environment Override slot.
1X Tone Mapped JPG (High-Res) for the Background, either mapped onto a Sphere or placed in Max's Environment Map slot.

Now, If I use a Vray Dome Light, do I use the High-Res HDRI and have the Light 'Affect Diffuse, Specular & Reflections'..

    OR

Use the Low-Res HDRI and have the Light not 'Affect Reflections' and keep the High-Res HDRI in the Environment Override slot?

Hopefully there is just a quick simple answer

    Many Thanks,

Not sure about others workflow but here is mine about IBL:

create VrayLight as Dome, put as much as possible hi-res HDRI in there, it will be use to lit the scene and to put reflection everywhere. Generally I create HDIR on my own.
You must put HDRI nowhere but in Dome VrayLight. Here is a quick test i made to clear what I talk about with generated HDRI with resolution 8000x5660..

All the light, reflection, background and caustics as well comes from HDRI, there is no additional light in the scene except dome VrayLight and VrayCamera., I can send you the scene with the HDRI if you like...

Im using maxwell render plugin to set and create an HDRI image (there is an option to export HDRI) based on daylight system of max, then used back with vray. The other way and most used by me is to take picture on site with my SLR camera then merge in PS to HDRI .
