But if it's an image, tiling presumably, the model needs UV coordinates, right?
Or is he using the camera for projection? He would probably have to to get the flat look...

I don't know, but I just got an e-mail saying he has added documentation. I'll down load it to get more insite.

Well he posted a pdf showing every dialog of his shader. Once it gets out on the net everyone can copy his method... maybe a mistake on his part.

          ok, now i'm curious

who knows how this works...obviously there is a dirtmap, and toon, i think?
probably some layered pencil sketch textures controlled with some falloff?

looks like it's controlled with shadows, somehow, not falloff. Maybe dirt is the Mask.

I am sure $100 is a lot to some people, but I suggest investing in the shader. I don't understand it... I just open an existing project, dropped the shader into the override mtl slot, and it worked. I have been in meeting all day and I'll be in meetings tomorrow. I'll study the shader this weekend... or maybe tonight.

A quick try at it with an equally quick "sketch" map...

Basically just a series of blends with different falloffs and dirt. Toon would probably do a better job on the edges but this is done just as a material. Max 9 file and bitmap attached.

instead to create those sketches in max I would use plugins in photoshop to have more control and for animations they usually have a batch option

Here is an example using the shader on my current project

Here is some samples the creator of the shader is showing.

Looks like for this scale, the map for the sketchy lines in the occlusion blend should be scaled down a bit. Overall it looks really nice minus the one distraction. I would also find a different way to do the backdrop, but that is just my personal preference.

I am having a small problem with this material.
There is a link in the asset management.

                          glare_streaks_star_Camera_filter.tif

it is hanging the machine, because it is looking for it all the time.

Can anybody who has this or if you have pavols mails please let me know .

                          Thank you

That's the map used for mental ray glare. You probably already have it. Look in the default project folder (can't remember if it's program files\3ds max 2010\ or if it's in Documents and Settings) or just search for it.

Thank you for that, But i am a Vray user, so any idea how that works?

The paths back to the textures are badly put togther, they hang constantly.
Should have been a much cleaner set up.

                              phil

Pavel fare play to him has written back and sent some tutorial videos he made for egit like me.
It is a little slow to load because it is a complet material.
So I will have to made do.

                              In short it works well.

A little old, but I am interested in a sketch type approach to an animation I am working on. Has anyone tried this 'plugin' with animation? Any good?
Also, the price seems to be $1000! Isn't that ridiculous????
                                Kind Regards,
