  • DR and irradiance maps

I was under the impression that you could save an iradiance map created from a DR in bucket mode and re-use it. Am I mistaken?

  • #2
unless the latest versions allow for it now,

DR can't save and reuse irradience maps.

as i know you canĀ“t create a map from the bucket mode. when you want to use a stored map with DR, you have to calculate the map with ONE machine first. then the other machines in the network can use the stored map.

This would be a great feature to add in the future, but probably very difficult.

Distributed Irradiance maps and photon maps are planned for 1.1 as far as I know.

That will be really cool! Does anyone know the timeline for that release?

                ??? I DONT GET IT

                Hello ALL....

How do the slave machines access the irradiance map???? Also, do I have to place all the textures in a default map path on the local machines as well or can it be done with a UNC path to the server?

                THANK YOU

I've got my maps UNC and on the server, the precalced Irrad map I copy local. either way they work, I'm still figuring out if it's quicker to copy all the stuff local, I assume it is.

                    ?????

                    r2j2,

Thanks for the speedy reply. Well we copied the maps and irradiance map to each slave machine...and it worked.

                    However, several problems have occurred:

1.Everytime we use DR (hit the render button) viz requires me to RESAVE the file....EVERYTIME....When I first tested this, it only asked me when the defualt file was not save. This time, I am opening the file.

                    2. When i change a texture to an existing object, it does not update in the rendering. I am simply changing texture in diffuse map rollout, not a new mat slot.

                    Am am also crashing sporadically.

Am running win2k and version M

                    Any thoughts or comments?

                    TIA

Where do you copy the map to on the local machine? Max root?

                          thank you for replying.

I created a folder on the primary disk called C:/Map2. I changed the ini file on all servers to include this path. I then created and directed my bitmaps to use Map2 folder locally.

                          TIA.

But why would this be any different than running a copy from the network server?

Sorry - modified the .ini file = max file - bitmap paths? Or vrayNet.ini?

                            thanks again.

We modified the 3dsviz.ini file to locate the maps locally because we do not want to have each rendering server logged in. The VrayNet.ini file is automatically created when doing a search through distributed rendering when you search for rendering servers located on the network.

Our current setup is working now. But we have written a batch script to copy all bitmaps located on my machine to be distributed to all rendering servers (i.e. c:/maps2).

For some unexplainable reason, viz is no longer asking me to save between renderings either or crashing. EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING PERFECT!!!! KNOCK ON WOOD.....twice!!!!!!
