  • Vray fastsss2 SSS translucency problem

    Hi Everyone,

I have been battling with this for a while now, and I am hoping you can help me.

Basically i have a character, and when I put a light behind it I want to see the light shining through the ears a little.
(As this is thinner than the rest of the head)

So, using the fastsss2 material I did the following:

    - Set the diffuse amount parameter to 0.6
    - Put in a slightly red map in the SSS colour map slot
    - put the other maps in the other slots etc..

However!, each time I render, my whole character always looks like it has pink skin due to the map in the sss slot and the 'diffuse amount' parameter set to 0.6

I think is must be missing something here.. and missing how to achieve translucency.

I have also see many posts saying your model size effects things too. (tho I found nothing to say how to chose the correct parameters)

    Can anyone offer any advise?

    Thanks,
    Adam

One thing---- REAL WORLD SIZES are imperitive!

If your character is not modeled to real world scale then you are going to have troubles using the preset parameters.

If the sub-surface depth of skin is say set to 2 centimeters & your characters ears are in fact only 2mm thick then yes...the whole body is likely to glow with scatered light.

To fix your problem without remodeling or scaling your scene....... adjust the 'SCALE' setting on the SSS material. [To convert cm to mm change your scale from 1.0 to 0.1]

    Cheers

      Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I think I am getting closer.

Face skin looks a bit 'hard' tho.

Also I don't think my setup is correct now, but I will keep playing with it and will let you know.
(To get it to this stage, I had to set my diffuse amount to 0, and put my diffuse map in my SSS map slot.... Ahg not good)

      I will keep trying

Attached is a TEST render (so disregard the model)

Like 3DMK says, the model scale is very important. Normally you can just use one of the presets and perhaps increase the scatter radius a little if necessary. Also, usually skin has only a very slight diffuse component (something like 0.1), the rest comes from sub-surface scattering.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

          Hi,

Yeah, I re scaled my model in the above, so it is around 178cm (ear thickness is around 0.8cm).
Am just trying to 'soften' the shader at the moment.

          Thanks for your advise
